L'azalea non costituisce un genere a sé ma rientra nel genere dei Rhododendron. Tale genere si divide in due gruppi: i Rododendri, grandi arbusti sempreverdi o decidui, e le Azalee, arbusti nani sempreverdi, a foglie verdi, oppure piccoli e decidui. Fino a pochi anni fa si credeva erroneamente che fossero due specie distinte, ma in realtà sia Azalee che Rododendri fanno parte di un unico genere, quello dei Rhododendron appunto, che a sua volta fa parte della famiglia delle Ericacee. Si tratta di piante molto longeve. Se trattate nella giusta maniera possono vivere anche più di 100 anni. E' per questo che vengono anche molto utilizzate per la produzione di bonsai.
