Le felci sono piante senza fiori, quindi senza semi, così come i funghi, le alghe, i licheni ed i muschi, per cui questi organismi vegetali,un tempo, venivano definiti “Piante crittogame”. All'inizio della stagione vegetativa, le fronde della felce, comunemente, ma impropriamente, definite come foglie, in fase di sviluppo hanno una curiosa e loro caratteristica forma a “bastone pastorale”.
