Le origini della Chiesa di S. Maria Maggiore, sita nel Borgo Vecchio, ad Avigliana, alle pendici del castello, sono incerte. Già nel XII secolo essa è citata come dipendenza della Prevostura di San Lorenzo d'Oulx. La chiesa ha subito nel corso dei secoli numerosi rifacimenti e si presenta attualmente con una veste barocca. Dell'originario complesso romanico rimane solo la base del campanile, rielaborato in chiave gotica nel corso del XV secolo con l'applicazione di decori a bacili di ceramica smaltata. Come accennato, l'interno ha subito profonde modifiche a partire dal XV secolo e si presenta attualmente a navata unica con cappelle laterali (edificate nel XIX secolo), presbiterio e coro poligonali. Tra gli arredi antichi conservati nella chiesa si citano il pulpito settecentesco, proveniente dall'ex convento di S. Agostino, e i dipinti barocchi raffiguranti le Storie dell'Antico Testamento e l'Annunciazione, mentre risale al 1926 la tela di Giovanni Paolo Crida raffigurante il La chiesa svolse funzioni di parrocchiale fino al 1974, anno in cui il culto è stato trasferito presso la nuova chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, situata nel borgo basso di Avigliana, nei pressi della stazione ferroviaria. Attualmente la chiesa è sede del Centro Culturale Vita e Pace, che ne ha promosso i lavori di restauro e le indagini archeologiche, ed ospita la collezione permanente delle opere scultoree in bronzo e gesso dell'artista Elsa Veglio Turino (1921-1986). Tra le opere facenti parte della collezione spiccano la Crocifissione e il Cristo svuotato, di intensa espressività.
