La antica chiesa di San Nicolò, presumibilmente costruita intorno al 1447 e ristrutturata in stile primo barocco all'inizio del XVII sec., è situata nella parte alta dell'abitato di Meida (Fraz. Di Pozza di Fassa). Si tratta di un interessante esempio di architettura alpina, con il tetto a capanna caratterizzato da due falde ripidissime coperte di scandole. All'interno si può vedere l'altare maggiore conservato nelle forme barocche del XVIII sec. con pala raffigurante San Nicola circondato da angeli e due altari laterali, quello a destra con la Madonna e le Sante Lucia e Barbara, e quello a sinistra col martirio di San Sebastiano. Interessante anche la nicchia della cappella laterale contenente una statua lignea della Madonna Nera con Bambino benedicente, entrambi con sfarzoso mantello dorato. Al culto di San Nicolò è legata un'usanza religiosa popolare ancora molto viva: se vi aggirate per Pozza nei giorni che precedono la festa del santo vescovo, il 6 dicembre, vi potrebbe capitare di imbattervi in spaventose creature infernali accompagnate dal suono sinistro di catene e campanacci che si alza lungo le strade del paese? sono i Krampus, i diavoli, che corrono a caccia di bambini? È la tradizione di San Nicolò, che nei primi giorni di dicembre fa ancor'oggi il giro delle case per chiedere ai bimbi come si sono comportati nell'arco dell'anno e quindi ricompensarli, se lo ritiene opportuno, con dei doni. Correndo rumorosamente, il Krampus annuncia l'avvicinarsi del santo, accompagnato dall'angelo con una gerla piena di doni, viene poi richiamato all'ordine e così il corteo può iniziare la tradizionale visita delle case. Una volta entrato in un'abitazione, San Nicolò interroga i bambini, spesso autenticamente spaventati per la presenza paurosa del Krampus che freme in un angolo trattenuto dalla mano ferma e benevola del vescovo. Il santo invita quindi i bimbi a inginocchiarsi e a pregare e poi, finalmente, estrae dalla gerla dell'angelo i doni tanto attesi. Alla fine il corteo lascia la casa per proseguire il giro di visite in paese. Il rito di San Nicolò rientrava un tempo in un ciclo più ampio di credenze e ritualità legate al periodo del solstizio d'inverno. #Chiese
