Se si esclude la porzione della rinascimentale facciata del palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici, il prospetto di torri e palazzi che chiude la parte meridionale della medioevale "platea communis" ricalca fedelmente quello del tredicesimo secolo. Sorte diversa subì la parte settentrionale della piazza, allorchè la signoria fiorentina, a dimostrazione della forza e della ricchezza della nuova egemonia politica fece abbattere il palazzo del Popolo, il palazzo del Comune e tutti i fabbricati residenziali, affidando poi al genio dell'aretino Vasari il progetto e l'edificazione delle splendide Logge ...
