""Nelle Aporia crataegi si vedono spesso esemplari appena schiusi con macchie color rosso sangue sulle ali.
Si tratta del "meconio", un liquido appunto rossatro e appiccioso che viene espulso dalla farfalla adulta poco dopo la schiusa e che, talvolta, macchia le sue ali.
Il meconio è costituito dai materiali di scarto e ai prodotti del metabolismo accumulatisi da quando il bruco si era impupato e che non erano potuti uscire all'esterno.
In alcune specie di Ninfalidi, come l'Aglais urticae che può schiudere contemporaneamente con migliaia di esemplari, questo evento ha dato origini in passato a superstizioni incredibili.
