Piazza della Signoria, Firenze ... dicembre 2015 ... Al concorso bandito nel 1509 da Cosimo I de Medici per la realizzazione della prima fontana pubblica fiorentina, parteciparono, tra gli altri, nomi prestigiosi dell'arte rinascimentale: Benvenuto Cellini, Baccio Bandinelli, Vincenzo Danti, Bartolomeo Ammannati e il Giambologna! Fu prescelto il Nettuno dell'Ammannati perchè ritenuto il più significativo nell'esaltare i traguardi marinari raggiunti in quei decenni dal Granducato di Toscana, con la presa dei possedimenti senesi, la progettazione di Livorno e la fondazione dell'Ordine di Santo Stefano deputato a combattere i Turchi sulle rotte del Mediterraneo. L'opera non fu accolta con particolare entusiasmo dai rissosi e schietti fiorentini. Si racconta che all'inaugurazione notturna della statua i presenti furono colpiti più dal candore marmoreo della figura che dalla sua bellezza: da qui il nome, o meglio il soprannome del Biancone, ed il motto coniato per l'occasione: "Ammannato, Ammannato, oh quanto marmo t'ha sciupato!!"
