Dato che questo uccello é molto raro volevo condividerlo con voi. Il picchio tridattilo ha piumaggio bianco e nero, con la sommità del capo colorata di giallo (soltanto nel maschio). Come indica il nome, ha 3 dita (anziché 4), 2 rivolte in avanti e una all'indietro: questa conformazione costituisce un ulteriore adattamento alla perforazione del legno con il becco, poiché agevola lo slancio con il capo per colpire rami e tronchi, che il picchio tridattilo sforacchia a spirale con un lento tambureggiamento. L'alimentazione consiste per lo più di insetti, che l'animale snida perlustrando i tronchi dal basso verso l'alto.
