Questo palazzo a far data dal 2007 rientra nelle sette meraviglie del mondo, e in parte questo tributo è dovuto alla leggenda che lo avvolge. Taj Mahal significa "Palazzo della Corona" e si trova sulle rive del fiume Yamuna, ad Agra nell'India settentrionale; fu eretto dal quinto imperatore Mughal , Shah Jahan, nel 1631 in memoria della sua amatissima seconda moglie, Mumtaz Mahal, principessa originaria della Persia. Mumtaz Mahal, che aveva appena dato alla luce il loro quattordicesimo figlio, morì mentre accompagnava suo marito durante una campagna militare. Mentre Mumtaz Mahal era ancora in vita, aveva chiesto all'imperatore di farle quattro promesse nel caso in cui fosse morta prima di lui. Per prima cosa gli fece promettere di costruire il Taj; la seconda era che si sarebbe dovuto sposare di nuovo per dare una nuova madre ai loro figli; la terza promessa era che sarebbe sempre stato benevolo con i loro figli ed infine la quarta, che avrebbe visitato la sua tomba nell'anniversario della morte. Il Taj sorge su una base di pietra arenaria rossa sormontata da un'enorme terrazzo di marmo bianco sul quale si posa la famosa cupola affiancata dai quattro minareti affusolati. La cupola è fatta di marmo bianco ma la sua posizione vicino al fiume fa sì che un magico gioco di colori che cambiano durante le ore del giorno e a seconda delle stagioni, diano al Taj Mahal riflessi di colori che lo rendono sempre diverso. Sembra quasi che questi cambi di colore rispecchino la mutevolezza dell'umore femminile, o almeno così si dice in India.... Il Taj Mahal viene considerato un monumento dedicato all'amore eterno.
