La Galleria dell'Industria Subalpina, come venne denominata all'epoca, fu progettata nel 1873 dall'architetto Pietro Carrera (1835-1887), il quale plasmò l'ambiente secondo la tipologia tipicamente ottocentesca dell'area commerciale riservata allo svago borghese, in voga grazie ai noti esempi delle più importanti capitali europee. In una versione più contenuta rispetto alla celebre galleria Vittorio Emanuele II di Milano, tale modello era destinato in città a riscuotere particolare successo, come attesta la realizzazione delle gallerie Nazionale, Umberto I e Natta, quest'ultima scomparsa nell'ambito del rifacimento di via Roma eseguito nel corso degli anni Trenta, lasciando posto all'odierna Galleria San Federico. Omaggio alla modernità a cui inneggiava la congiuntura coeva, l'ampia sala, articolata in due piani, esalta l'uso di ferro e vetro specialmente nella nervatura della volta, asservendo gli elementi strutturali alle esigenze delle funzioni decorative, come mostra soprattutto il secondo livello. In seguito ai danni provocati dai bombardamenti durante la seconda guerra mondiale, la galleria è stata in parte ricostruita, mentre in tempi più recenti l'area centrale è stata interdetta dalla creazione di aiuole, provvedimento che riecheggia il giardino inserito inizialmente su disegno di Carrera. Pur avendo mantenuto un rilievo commerciale con la presenza di ristoranti e negozi piuttosto rinomati, appare oggi uno spazio poco frequentato, ben lungi dal costituire uno dei luoghi più apprezzati del passeggio torinese.
