La processione del Venerdì Santo a Chieti è, insieme alla processione di Orte, la processione sacra più antica d'Italia, risalente addirittura intorno alla metà dell'anno 800, pur in assenza di documenti certi che ne attestano tale datazione. Certi sono, invece, i documenti ufficiali che, nel 1650 attestano il pellegrinaggio effettuato a Roma, in occasione dell'Anno Santo, dell'Arciconfraternita del Sacro Monte dei Morti, che ne ha sempre curato il suo svolgimento. Per tradizione, la processione si svolge sempre, a prescindere dal clima o da eventi catastrofici, svolgendosi osì anche durante i tragici eventi bellici del secondo conflitto mondiale. Di assoluto interesse è il canto struggente del Miserere, composto nel 1740 da Saverio Selecchy e che viene suonato e cantato per tutto il percorso da un organico di circa 300 tra coristi e musici
