La chiesa e l'ex convento di San Francesco di Susa, edificati a partire dal secondo quarto del Duecento, presentano numerose testimonianze ad affresco. L'origine del convento è stata attribuita dalla tradizione allo stesso frate Francesco, ma questa lettura non è suffragata dai documenti. Secondo la leggenda, i primi Frati Minori, in compagnia del Santo, si fermarono nella città di Susa, ospiti di Beatrice di Ginevra, moglie del Conte di Savoia Tommaso I. In tale occasione Francesco avrebbe donato alla nobildonna, in segno di accettazione di un terreno ove stabilire la propria comunità, una manica della povera tonaca; tale reliquia è oggi conservata nella chiesa dei Frati Minori Cappuccini ad Annecy, dopo essere stata ospitata per un lungo periodo nella Sainte Chapelle di Chambéry. Il convento francescano di Susa acquisì ben presto un importante ruolo sia in campo religioso che civile ed ebbe la caratteristica di essere una fondazione "anomala", in quanto situato in una località posta all'interno dell'arco alpino e non a ridosso del medesimo, come era avvenuto per altre fondazioni dell'area. Soppresso in epoca napoleonica, esso fu riaffidato ai frati francescani nel 1899. Questi ultimi hanno lasciato definitivamente nel 2007 la casa segusina e l'ex convento svolge ora attività di accoglienza per gruppi e singoli pellegrini. All'interno della chiesa, la testata della navata destra ospita un ciclo pittorico del XV secolo raffigurante gli evangelisti e gli apostoli Pietro e Paolo, mentre la sala capitolare presenta un ciclo con santi e beati francescani databile al 1340-50, con una interessante raffigurazione di San Francesco che riceve le stigmate. Infine, nella sacrestia nuova sono visibili le figure della Vergine, della Maddalena e di S. Bernardo, ancora parzialmente sotto scialbo. Nella testata della navata sinistra, la cappella detta la cappella del Presepe, in origine dedicata ad usi funerari, presenta un ciclo affrescato di grande interesse, risalente alla metà del XIV secolo e recentemente riscoperto e restaurato, dedicato al tema della morte e della salvezza: particolarmente intense sono le raffigurazioni della crocifissione, e la cavalcata dei tre vivi e tre morti. Nel chiostro maggiore, denominato di San Francesco, sono conservati antichi frammenti lapidei, tre epigrafi del Duecento, tre epigrafi del Trecento e due belle finestre in cotto quattrocentesche in stile gotico piemontese. Sul lato del chiostro contiguo alla chiesa si ammirano inoltre frammenti, recentemente restaurati, di un affresco quattrocentesco rappresentante Sant'Anna, la Madonna, il Bambino e una figura maschile.
