Your best bet is to go to a shop such as Castle Cameras in Bournemouth (Winton) and there they'll show you, you try and they guarantee for six months. I always buy secondhand - not everything is only sold because it is stolen or broken, Ann! If you can't afford to pay top dollar for new stuff (like me) then you don't need to sacrifice too much. You probably won't get the latest models at bargain prices but like anything that's less fashionable or been replaced by a newer model, some folk just trade in cos they think it'll be better. Capitalise on their stupidity, Ann! My "new" Sigma used for this shot was secondhand, as was my mint recent 35mm DX f1.8. By the way, the Salisbury branch of Castle Cameras is where I do all my socialising and chatting and I am personal friends with them all. I'm not biased, it's just that Bournemouth doesn't really have any other retailer as an outlet. And if you ever have a problem or want advice anytime after, even after the warranty, just pop in! www.castlecameras.co.uk/ - I'll ask for a commission for suggesting you but I know already what their response will be! lol

As it happens, I was already planning a trip to Castle Cameras in Bournemouth sometime over the next few days - I find the staff there very helpful! More urgently than a macro lens, I need a new camera bag and some filters, if I can work out what I need. The LPH trip is coming up very soon (end of next week) and I know that I ought to have filters of some kind to get the most from the trip and improve my chances of getting landscape photos that I'll be pleased with (although I was told not to buy specially for the workshop but just take whatever I have)

I hadn't realised that Castle Cameras dealt in second hand equipment, though - that is really helpful to know!

I should hold off on the filters, there are very few you actually NEED in these days of Photoshop, except for a polariser. Grad greys can become very specialist and can wait. A bag from CCs is an excellent idea, the sort of bulky thing that you really do need to physically see and try out and weather in Cumbria is not going to be kind to you, after all! The CC website is "not very good" (a sanitised version of what I usually say) and their secondhand stock not that well advertised. I quickly checked to see what they currently have - though some items come in and get sold straight away, without ever making it online, so popping in and registering an interest and perhaps they'll email or phone if it comes in. Their used prices aren't that low but they do take the gamble out of buying used, to a large degree but they should price match any UK stock new prices (not Amazon, but such as WEX or Jessops). Useful to know. Let me know how you get on!

Thanks again, Tim! I have already replaced my lost polariser but I'm surprised you feel I don't 'need' filters. Can I do long exposure shots without them? That's a genuine question - I've never tried, so really don't know, although I guess I can ask Google, or, of course, simply give it a try!

Ah, I'd forgotten out neutral density filters - it's something I'm only just getting into myself. But then you need a tripod - do you have one of those? NDs can suffer horrible colour casts and guessing the exposure tricky. It's quite a speciliast and advanced genre.

I still think you'd be better seeing what John G says about it all and get his advice, you are paying good money for him to do so, now aren't you? That is why he said 'bring what you have'. You don't need to try and impress him or anybody else, Ann. I'm sure a few won't even have a polariser. Also, filters can be expensive, get damaged VERY easily (or lost) so be sure you really need it first and exactly what it'll do for YOUR photos and your style, not cos you liked the effect of one you saw in a book. For example, the Amazon price of a Big Stopper is 100 quid Then, there's the filter holder - and then a filter adaptor to screw it on the front of the lens. John G will tell you. Trust him.

I do have a tripod but don't use it, although, I will, of course, be taking it with me and expecting to use it there! I'm not out to impress, simply to learn as much as I can. Knowing the other blippers who will be on the week, I'm pretty confident that they are all at a level well beyond my own and have much more equipment. However, I am who I am and have no wish to pretend to know more than I do. They seem to be a supportive bunch, so I hope to draw upon their joint expertise rather than be daunted by it!
I have to say, you have almost convinced me to hold fire on the filters for now - thank you :)

If you were John G, would you be more pleased if you sought his practical advice or made a rash, possibly silly mistake? Ask the others going on the LPH beforehand what they think if you wish, of course and I know the excitement rush you can get by such purchases but you really can wash money down the drain by buying such. People will be more flattered and appreciated if you take their wisdom and knowledge and then take that advice. I'll leave it at that.

I will add though that with all the Lakes offers and the other stuff, such as Photopshop classes that JG will be concentrating on, interaction with the others, that the thought of doing time exposures will be just a fleeting and possibly forgotten thought by the time you're actually there. On all trips and excusrsions, there's always one type of photography that you cannot do, either cos you can't carry it, haven't the knowledge or the money to buy the kit. Keep it in proportion Ann.

All good advice! I'll do my best to keep it in proportion. As with any trip, there's always that last minute thought that there may be something essential that has been overlooked! Such last minute purchases often prove to be unnecessary and as such are best left unmade.
'Night, Tim!

I also forgot to add that you may have the knowledge AND the kit - but left it at home!!

Dear Tim my liquidambars I covered the garden of these beautiful leaves, very beautiful to photograph but very boring and difficult (given the number) to be collected. ;-)
hello Stefano

ps ah .. about ... very nice photo.

Thank you Stefano - I agree! No doubt photographing fallen leaves is far more enjoyable than sweeping them up!
