Il monumento al Re Alfonso XII è un'altra, imponente opera, presente all'interno del parco del Buen Retiro. Inaugurato nel 1922 è diventano nel corso degli anni, un punto di ritrovo per la popolazione di Madrid e non solo. Nel 1902 la regina madre, Maria Cristina, organizzò un concorso nazionale per costruire un monumento al re Alfonso XII. con un grandioso progetto da realizzarsi in uno dei lati lunghi dell'Estanque del Retiro.L' architetto Josè Grases Riera vinse il concorso, presentando un progetto grandioso, che prevedeva la statua del Re a cavallo, circondata da altre, numerosissime, statue. L'installazione è posta al lato del lago e ritrae il Re Alfonso XII sul suo destriero, poggiato su un ampio colonnato semi circolare, alla base del quale ci sono altre statue raffiguranti, tra gli altri, leoni e donne. L'imponenza del monumento che abbraccia una parte del lago del Parco del Buen Retiro testimonia l'attaccamento del popolo spagnolo alla propria Monarchia: infatti la statua fu realizzata con sottoscrizioni popolari. Oggi, tutte le domeniche, decine di percussionisti provenienti da tutto il mondo e diversi gruppi di giocolieri, si ritrovano ai piedi del monumento per allestire uno spettacolo improvvisato che coinvolge sia i turisti che i cittadini di Madrid, in un turbinio di colori e balli all'insegna del divertimento.
