Melitaea didyma (Esper, 1778) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Nymphalinae - Apertura alare: Da 3,4 a 4,5 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutte le regioni, ad eccezione della Sardegna. - Habitat: Prati e incolti soleggiati dal livello del mare sino a oltre 2000 m. Periodo di volo: Polivoltina in giugno-luglio e agosto-settembre. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie essenze tra cui quelle dei generi Linaria, Anthirrhinum, Plantago, Veronica, ecc... - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina un po' più grande del maschio e con disegni neri ben sviluppati. - Variazioni: Tra i maschi vi possono essere casi di nanismo con esemplari di 2,6 cm. Questa specie è molto variabile nell'estensione dei disegni neri, in particolare nella femmina che, nelle molteplici popolazioni, può presentare sia individui chiari, simili ai maschi, sia scuri, velati di nero e con colorazione fulva tendente al giallo e al bianco. - Specie simili: Melitaea trivia che si differenzia sul diritto delle ali per la serie degli archetti neri premarginali con andamento continuo, senza interruzioni, andando a fondersi nella fascia nera marginale. Dalle altre specie del genere Melitaea si distingue per la frammentazione del disegno nero del rovescio delle ali posteriori costituito da piccoli tratti staccati uno dall'altro.
