La piccola Isola di San Giulio, raggiungibile in battello o in motoscafo, è dominata dalla basilica romanica, dal palazzo vescovile e dall'abbazia benedettina. La leggenda narra che quest'isola, distante non più di 400 metri dalla riva di Orta, un tempo era uno scoglio abitato da serpi e terribili mostri, fino a quando nel 390 vi approdò San Giulio: attraversando le acque del lago sopra il suo mantello e guidato nella tempesta dal suo bastone, il Santo fondò una chiesa, nella quale scelse poi di essere sepolto, e trasformò l'isola nel centro di evangelizzazione di tutta la regione.
