La chiesa di S. Francesco posta al fondo del lato sinistro della piazza che un tempo si chiamava Maggiore - oggi Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II- all'angolo di via Carlo Alberto, si presenta con una severa facciata in cotto. Le origini della chiesa sono antichissime infatti la fondazione di una prima cappella dedicata a S. Francesco potrebbe risalire al 1210, al tempo del non sufficientemente documentato passaggio del Santo nel suo viaggio verso la Francia. La gotica chiesa originaria venne abbattuta nel 1755 e la ricostruzione fu affidata all'architetto Filippo Castelli, seguace di Juvarra. La chiesa era da poco terminata (1788) allorché, con l'occupazione francese, venne confiscata assieme agli edifici conventuali e adibita ad usi militari; i francescani poterono, salvare gli splendidi arredi che tuttora figurano nella chiesa, dai candelabri ai dipinti tra cui l'Immacolata Concezione con l'Eterno, ora nel vano di accesso alle scale del Convento, uno dei capolavori di Michele Antonio Milocco, realizzato tra il 1730 e il 1750. Vanno infine ricordati i dipinti del pittore moncalierese Tommaso Juglaris, tra cui una deposizione, la tela raffigurante San Giuseppe da Copertino di Giovanni Domenico Molinari, uno tra i più fedeli allievi del Beaumont, e la pregevole statua lignea della Madonna.
