Echinopsis oxygona è originaria del sud del Brasile , Uruguay e nel nord dell'Argentina. E' uno dei cactus con cui quasi tutti i cactofili e non iniziamo la collezione per via della sua facilità di coltivazione e riproduzione. Si trova facilmente nei classici giardini "delle nonne" in vasi quasi sempre abbandonati in un angolo... Ha un portamento globoso da giovane e cilindrico quando cresce. Raggiunge 30cm di altezza e la base lignifica. Ha da 10 a 20 o più costolature piuttosto prominenti e leggermente tubercolate. Le spine sono corte e spuntano da una leggera peluria lanosa bianca. Il fiore è una rosa imbutiforme. molto grande e appariscente. Leggermente profumato, lungo sino a 15cm e largo 10cm. fiorisce a metà estate ed la fioritura dura solo 2/3 giorni.
