Quando il palazzo fu abbandonato dalla famiglia Contarini (i suoi proprietari) e rimase disabitato, iniziarono a circolare voci tra i barcaioli e i pescatori che si avventuravano di notte da quella parte della laguna: si udivano rumori, sibili e rimbombi. si pensa che una banda di falsari fece del casino il proprio covo e che per continuare i propri traffici cercava di spaventare i curiosi; altri parlarono di feste e orge sessuali, o addirittura cerimonie di sette che invocavano il diavolo; altri ancora pensarono che si trattasse degli spiriti degli artisti e dei letterati che nel cinquecento frequentavano il casino (si dice che il casino abbia ospitato personaggi famosi come Tiziano Vecellio, Jacopo Tintoretto, Giorgione, Pietro Aretino, Jacopo Sansovino, Paolo Veronese). scattata in posa B 5 sec.
