Nel nordovest del Marocco, ai piedi del Monte Zerhoun, a solo un'ora da Fez e a 25 chilometri da Meknes, si trova la città santa di Moulay Idriss. Da secoli luogo di pellegrinaggio è considerata dai mussulmani la città più sacra dopo la Mecca. Le sue origini risalgono al 788 dopo Cristo quando Moulay Idris, il primo re marocchino, diretto discendente di Fatima, la figlia di Maometto, stabilì qui la capitale del suo nuovo regno, fondato una volta fuggito precipitosamente dalla Mecca. Moulay Idriss è una pittoresca città dal candido colore bianco che fino al 2005 non era accessibile ai non mussulmani. Per la maggior parte dei turisti occidentali però la sua attrazione principale, il mausoleo di Idriss I, che si trova appena fuori dalla piazza principale, è ancora off limits.
