La mordigallina (Anagallis arvensis) è una pianta europea della famiglia delle Primulaceae. Gli uccelli e gli animali da cortile che se ne cibano, possono rimanere intossicati e secondo una tradizione popolare il nome 'Mordigallina' deriverebbe proprio dagli effetti tossici che può avere la pianta, sulle galline. Il nome scientifico Anagallis, invece, deriva dal greco Anagelao che significa ridere a crepapelle o gioire. Parole che, secondo la credenza popolare, si riferiscono al fatto che i suoi fiori restano ridenti ed aperti solo se colpiti dai raggi diretti del sole e probabilmente perché considerata una pianta apportatrice di serenità per le sue antiche proprietà esilaranti.
