Situata nel centro storico della città di Caltanissetta,venne costruita tra gli anni 1570-1620 e fu aperta al pubblico nel 1622. Venne intitolata così per distinguerla dalla chiesa madre, eretta nel Cinquecento ai piedi della fortezza di Pietrarossa, e che venne conseguentemente soprannominata: la Vetere.
