La città è stata scoperta nel 1972 da un contadino . Özkonak è una delle tre grandi fortezze sotterranee della regione, insieme a Kaymaklı e Derinkuyu.Le città sotterranee della Cappadocia (come Derinkuyu e Kaymakli) furono scavate e abitate principalmente da comunità cristiane tra il IV e il X secolo d.C, e potevano ospitare fino a 20000 persone. La città è composta da più livelli realizzati in granito vulcanico, collegati da tunnel e dotati di un sistema di comunicazione .
