(distanza 30 milioni di anni luce) M 51(A) è un oggetto astronomico che comprende due galassie distinte. La più grande e famosa Galassia Vortice è una classica galassia a spirale. Dai dati di Hubble, si evince che la piccola galassia a destra dell’immagine, NGC 5195, sta passando dietro ed è parzialmente coperta da uno dei bracci più esterni.  I ricercatori hanno scoperto che i campi magnetici alla periferia della grande Galassia Vortice non seguono più la struttura a spirale, bensì sembrano distorti. La causa potrebbe essere appunto la vicina galassia giallastra che attira a sé la punta più esterna di uno dei bracci e ciò ne aumenta il tumulto, forse addirittura rafforzando i campi magnetici.
