Ah…questi Romani! Murenarium di Santirene La rocciosa costa di Briatico, precisamente la scogliera di Santirene, dall’acqua limpidissima e dalle mille sfumature, nasconde il “murenarium”, un’ antica peschiera di epoca romana di cui ancora oggi sono ben visibili la vasca principale e le piccole vasche secondarie collegate tra loro da canali semisommersi. E’ uno dei siti più belli della Calabria, ciò che rimane dei complessi impianti di acquacoltura costruiti in calcestruzzo e pozzolana tra il I sec. a.C. e il I sec. d.C., lungo le coste come pars produttiva di “villae” marittime. Grazie ad un avanzato sistema di ricambio idrico dell'acqua spesso sfruttando le maree e i canali appositi per garantire l'ossigenazione dell'acqua, le antiche peschiere romane permettevano l'allevamento di pesci, crostacei e specie pregiate come murene, gronghi, destinate alla tavola dei ricchi patrizi.
