Portrait of a Boudouma woman (Chad). HUMANKIND, my premium, limited-edition, museum-quality standard book featuring over 200 large-format photos. Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com Boudouma are an Arab community who has been in the territory of Chad for hundreds of years, especially in the south central and western areas near Lake Chad. Although widely distributed, they form a single ethnic group made up of many tribes and lineages that share common cultural and linguistic roots. They are part of the broader Arab population of Chad and speak varieties of Chadian Arabic. Their presence in the region is linked to historical Arab migrations across the Sahel, which strengthened trade networks and the spread of Islam. They are semisedentary or seminomadic and herd camels, horses, cattle, goats, and sheep in the Lake Chad basin. Their pastoral way of life is adapted to the seasonal climate of the Sahel. Livestock is central to their economy and social organization, though some groups also practice small scale farming and local trade. In the rainy season, they spread out through the region to take advantage of fresh pastures and temporary water sources created by seasonal rains. In the dry season, they live a more settled existence, usually on the dormant agricultural lands of their sedentary neighbors, negotiating grazing rights through customary agreements. Social life is traditionally organized around extended families and tribal leadership, with customary law and Islamic principles playing an important role in conflict resolution and community cohesion. Around N'Djamena some Boudouma have become more settled due to urban influence and economic opportunities.
