Mundari cattle camp at sunset (South Sudan). HUMANKIND, limited-edition, premium, museum-quality standards book featuring over 200 large-format photos. Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Mundari are cattle herders who live in symbiosis with their Ankole Watusi cattle, characterized by their large horns. At sunset the Mundari cattle camp in South Sudan feels suspended between the earthly and the spiritual. The sky shifts from pale gold to deep orange and violet, bathing everything in a soft and glowing light. Smoke rises from small fires made of dried cattle dung, drifting through the camp and wrapping people and animals in a hazy veil that blurs edges and quiets movement. The long horned cattle return from grazing, their silhouettes monumental against the horizon, their horns catching the last light like polished ivory. Herders move calmly among them, calling softly, guiding them into groups with gestures learned over a lifetime, while children run barefoot through the dust and women tend to evening tasks. The air is thick with the scent of earth, ash and livestock, and every sound seems muted as darkness approaches. As the sun disappears, the camp becomes intimate and ceremonial, illuminated by embers and the first stars overhead. In this moment the bond between the Mundari people and their cattle feels almost sacred, and the camp itself seems to breathe with an ancient rhythm, timeless, mystical and deeply connected to the land and the sky.
