Mi trovo qui, al vecchio porto di Monopoli. L'aria ha quel sapore salmastro che conosco da sempre, un profumo di mare e di fatica che si attacca ai vestiti. Non c'è la fretta della pesca, solo la quiete di un mestiere antico, fatto di gesti che si ripetono uguali da generazioni. Qui ccanto a me ci sono due pescatori che con le mani callose si muovono all'unisono sulle reti umide da pesca. Stanno rammendando, cucendo pazientemente gli strappi che il mare, generoso e crudele, ha lasciato sul loro strumento di lavoro. Ogni nodo è un pensiero, un ricordo delle notti in mare, delle albe viste dal largo, e un'incessante speranza per la prossima uscita. Attorno c'è il porto, è vivo, anche se in crisi e con poche giovani leve interessate a questo duro mestiere. Si sentono le voci sommesse degli altri pescatori, il leggero dondolio dei pescherecci attraccati, e in sottofondo il rumore lontano della città che si sveglia. Gli edifici alle mie spalle sono un segno dei tempi che cambiano, del porto che si espande oltre la nostra piccola tradizione, ma qui, su questo molo, il tempo sembra essersi fermato, scandito solo dal ritmo delle mani che lavorano, assicurando che l'eredità della pesca artigianale non si perda.
