La chiesa fu costruita nell'anno 998 sull'Isola Tiberina per contenere le reliquie di san Bartolomeo apostolo; ha la dignità di basilica minore. Bartolomeo, uno dei dodici apostoli di Gesù, è una figura di cui si conosce relativamente poco, ma che è ancora oggi profondamente venerata nella tradizione cristiana. Si ritiene che fosse presente al primo miracolo compiuto da Gesù, la trasformazione dell'acqua in vino durante le nozze di Cana. La morte di san Bartolomeo (apostolo) è legata alla tradizione che lo vede scuoiato vivo. Altre fonti, invece, si riferiscono alla "Notte di san Bartolomeo", un massacro di ugonotti avvenuto a Parigi tra il 23 e il 24 agosto 1572.
