La loro formazione risale all'eruzione del 1892 che ebbe inizio con la comparsa di una frattura radiale e quindi una bottoniera di cinque crateri, ben visibili in questa foto aerea. L'eruzione da cui ebbero origine durò 173 giorni e percorse circa 7 km. I due crateri che costituiscono l'apparato eruttivo principale furono intitolati al vulcanologo Orazio Silvestri.
