A volte il ballo è ritmato dal canto tenore. Le tipologie di ballo Il movimento base del ballo è un assecondamento ritmico simile ad un sussulto cui partecipa soprattutto il tronco del corpo, su cui si innestano i vari passi, ognuno dei quali corrisponde all'unisono con il ritmo musicale; la parte superiore del corpo si mantiene rigida mentre il movimento è affidato esclusivamente agli arti inferiori. La maggior parte dei balli sardi tradizionali si divide in due famiglie principali: danze mono-strutturate e danze bi-strutturate, differenziate dall'uso di due ritmi differenti (seriu e alligru). Il ballo più diffuso e il ballo sardo per antonomasia, è su ballu tundu (il ballo tondo), certo il più semplice, imperniato su un cerchio che si scompone ma al quale si torna inevitabilmente, dopo ogni variazione coreografica. Fra le danze mono-strutturate, di origine più antica, ricordiamo su ballu seriu (il ballo posato, serio), su passu torrau (il passo che ritorna), mentre le danze bi-strutturate sono composte da una parte lenta e da una più energica.
