La Biblioteca Reale di Torino è una delle più importanti istituzioni culturali della città e conserva oltre 200.000 volumi, carte antiche, incisioni e disegni, come il celebre “Autoritratto” di Leonardo da Vinci. Nel 1831 Carlo Alberto di Savoia-Carignano decide di ampliare la biblioteca di corte con l'inserimento di innumerevoli volumi acquistati presso gli antiquari di tutta Europa e della sua raccolta personale, a tal fine incarica una ristretta cerchia di collaboratori che intraprendono numerose ricerche all'estero per aggiornarsi sui progressi delle lettere, delle scienze e delle arti. Nel corso di questi viaggi vengono raccolti documenti sulla storia dei domini di Casa Savoia e opere notevoli per la loro rarità o bellezza: la Biblioteca si arricchisce così di preziosi volumi, libri antichi e codici miniati. Nel 1839 Carlo Alberto acquista dal collezionista Giovanni Volpato una raccolta di disegni dal Quattrocento al Settecento di grandi maestri italiani e stranieri, fra i quali Michelangelo, Raffaello, Rembrandt e Leonardo da Vinci, del quale si conservano ancora oggi 13 fogli autografi e il Codice sul volo degli uccelli, giunto in Biblioteca per donazione nel 1893. Con il rapido accrescimento dei fondi librari, l'antica sede posta al primo piano del Palazzo Reale si rivela ben presto insufficiente. Il progetto per la nuova sede viene affidato all'architetto di corte Pelagio Palagi, che disegna gli arredi e gli scaffali addossati alle pareti, disposti su due livelli. Nel 1842 viene inaugurata la nuova sede della biblioteca palatina al piano terreno dell'ala di levante di Palazzo Reale, originariamente destinata al servizio della corte, agli ufficiali e ai dotti interessati allo studio della storia patria e delle belle arti. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, con il passaggio allo Stato dei beni di Casa Savoia, la Biblioteca Reale diventa una biblioteca pubblica statale e dal 2016 è Istituto annesso ai Musei Reali di Torino.
