Situata sulle pendici del Campidoglio, proprio alla base della scalinata che conduce alla Basilica dell'Ara Coeli, la magnifica Insula dell'Ara Coeli era un antico isolato romano di edifici. Risalente al II secolo d.C., l'insula rappresenta un importante esempio di architettura domestica romana. Distinta dalla domus, la residenza privata della classe alta con un atrio e un peristilio, l'insula era un blocco di case popolari che ospitava numerose famiglie. Nella Roma imperiale, quando la popolazione crescente della città, la conseguente necessità di case e la scarsità di terreni edificabili spinsero alla costruzione di alti condomini, divenne la forma più comune di edifici residenziali. Composto da almeno cinque piani , alcuni dei quali ancora conservati, l'edificio fu scoperto durante i lavori di demolizione che interessarono l'area negli anni Trenta, quando si decise di smantellare la chiesa barocca di Santa Rita da Cascia e di ricostruirla tra il Teatro di Marcello e Piazza Campitelli. Furono rinvenuti anche un campanile romanico e un arcosolio decorato con un affresco del XIV secolo: appartenevano alla chiesa di San Biagio de' Mercato trasformata in chiesa di Santa Rita nel XVII secolo, su progetto di Carlo Fontana. Guardando in basso dalla strada, si può vedere il livello stradale originale e le grandi arcate del portico che ospitavano le botteghe degli artigiani e gli esercizi commerciali. Al piano terra c'erano le "tabernae", i cui proprietari vivevano al piano superiore, nel mezzanino. Il piano all'attuale livello stradale era l'antico secondo piano, o "piano nobile", costituito da stanze spaziose e luminose, generalmente affittate a famiglie della classe alta. I piani superiori, d'altra parte, erano costituiti da appartamenti piccoli e angusti, che venivano affittati a famiglie con limitate possibilità economiche. Nell'insula potevano vivere circa 400 persone .
