Alle falde di un Etna arrabbiato e fumante, tra fitte strade nere di sabbia vulcanica, ho incontrato Francesco, Maestro Puparo da oltre 50 anni. La sua vita è stata dedicata interamente alla costruzione dei Pupi. La realizzazione di questi personaggi comporta la conoscenza di una quantità enorme di saperi ed una capacità di adattamento formidabile. E' necessario lavorare il legno, incidere il metallo, trattare le stoffe, sino a giungere alla decorazione dei volti. Mi affascina sempre ascoltare storie di persone che, partendo dai quartieri più popolari delle grandi città del Sud, hanno saputo inventarsi un mestiere rubando avidamente qua e là dalla vita che li circondava quelle competenze e abilità su cui hanno poi edificato un'esistenza appagante e ricca di esperienze e soddisfazioni. Bisogna possedere grandi sicurezze interiori ed un inossidabile entusiasmo verso la vita, per affrontare percorsi che all'affacciarsi di ogni stagione devono costruirsi nuove certezze. ___________________________ Mascalucia (CT);
