Sorse sui resti della più antica Pieve di Santa Maria, ricordata fin dall'XI secolo, su progetto dell'architetto senese Sozzo da Rustichino; la data dell'inizio dei lavori è il 1294, ma la chiesa così come la vediamo oggi, è l'esito di numerosi interventi: la facciata in stile gotico di scuola senese del XIV secolo è originale solo fino all'altezza del portale, la parte superiore è stata realizzata solo nell'800.
