Il castello venne costruito nel periodo bizantino come avamposto difensivo e, nel 1062, conquistato dai Normanni con a capo il Conte Ruggero, che fece ricostruire e fortificare le mura di cinta. Allo stato attuale restano il ponte Normanno, parte delle mura di cinta, le fondamenta delle torri, alcune scalette scavate nella roccia e la meridiana. Il castello, scelto come propria dimora da Federico II d'Aragona, per alcuni studiosi deve il suo nome ai musulmani che pare chiamassero i normanni col nome di lombardi, altri vogliono che esso provenga da una colonia di gente lombarda ospitata nel castello dal gran conte Ruggiero nel 1086, mentre invece potrebbe verosimilmente aver preso nome da quell' Enrico di Lombardia che ebbe in moglie Flandrina figlia di Ruggiero.
