La Montemartini è stata la prima centrale di produzione di energia di Roma, quando fu dismessa fu ristrutturata come "archeologia industriale". Poi il Comune, dovendo fare dei lavori in Campidoglio, vi trasferì statue, mosaici ed altro. Il trasferimento che doveva essere provvisorio, essendo apprezzata moltissimo la commistione tra archeologia e archeologia industriale, divenne definitivo e la Centrale Museo permanente.
