Prima che sull'isola fosse costruita una chiesa, vi sorgeva un tempio dedicato a Živa, la dea pagana della vita e della fertilità. Nel 745, dopo la conversione al cristianesimo, il tempio fu sostituito da una chiesa dedicata alla nascita della Madonna. Nel 1465 la chiesa fu modificata in stile gotico, con la struttura a una navata. La particolarità della chiesa era il campanile indipendente dell'altezza di 52 m, costruito in pietra porosa. Nel campanile panoramico si trovano una campana grande e due piccole, tuttora in funzione. L'attuale aspetto barocco della chiesa risale al secolo XVII. Sull'isola sorse allora anche la cappella della Madonna. Alla stessa epoca risale anche la celebre scalinata formata da 99 gradini in pietra. Ancor oggi vige l'antica usanza secondo la quale lo sposo deve portare la sposa in braccio per tutti i 99 scalini se la desidera sposare nella chiesa sul lago.
