Lago di Catel Gandolfo in alto al centro della foto La Specola Vaticana può ritenersi uno dei più antichi osservatori astronomici del mondo, se si considera che le sue radici storiche possono farsi risalire alla seconda metà del Cinquecento, in concomitanza con la costruzione della Torre dei Venti e la costituzione di una commissione per la riforma del calendario ad opera del papa bolognese Gregorio XIII Boncompagni (1572-1585).
