Canyon del Sumidero. Dopo un'ora di volo da Città del Messico eccomi a Tuxtla Gutiérrez, in Chiapas. Dopo un breve tragitto in autobus arriviamo a Chiapa de Corzo, una cittadina ad una mezzoretta da Tuxtla, da dove partono le imbarcazioni che effettuano le escursioni nel Canyon del Sumidero. Il panorama è molto cambiato e un cielo plumbeo e l'alto tasso di umidità lasciano presagire che sarà molto difficile scattare foto con un bel cielo azzurro. Mi informo di questa particolare condizione climatica e la guida locale mi spiega che parte della foschia è dovuta all'effetto dell'umidità che generano le foreste e la giungla che dominano la regione ed il fenomeno è accentuato anche dal periodo dell'anno nel quale i contadini bruciano i campi. Approfondendo ulteriormente l'argomento scopro che i poveri contadini messicani non hanno la possibilità di lasciare a riposo i terreni per operare la rotazione delle colture e dunque bruciano la vegetazione per creare nuove aree di semina. Il governo cerca (con poca convinzione) di disincentivare questa pratica che porta ad una costante deforestazione ma non offre vere alternative ai poveri contadini che vedono nei proventi della terra la loro unica fonte di sussistenza. Ci imbarchiamo dunque su veloci lance a motore (per nulla ecologiche!) ma non prima di aver indossato un ingombrante giubbotto di salvataggio che, a parte impedirmi parzialmente agili movimenti fotografici (più o meno...), fa si che la percezione del persistente caldo umido aumenti considerevolmente. Il disagio, se non altro quello del caldo, dura poco perché il nostro pilota parte a forte velocità lungo il primo tratto del Canyon tra i gridolini eccitati e falsamente spaventati di qualche signora. Io invece cerco e ottengo una posizione a prua che mi permetta di poter avere una visione ottimale già pregustando la possibilità di scattare qualche, si spera, foto interessante alla natura incontaminata nella quale mi sto immergendo. Ma cos'è il Canyon del Sumidero e da che specie animali e vegetali è popolato? La parola "canyon" non posso che associarla a quello che è il canyon per antonomasia, il Grand Canyon, ma questo fratellino minore ha ben poco in comune ma, seppur le sue dimensioni siano di molto contenute, offre un panorama davvero peculiare. Il fascino è dato dalla vegetazione rigogliosa che circonda le rive e dal colore verde intenso del fiume Grijalva. La fenditura dalle pareti verticali alte dai 200 metri fino a un chilometro, apertasi nella Sierra Norte de Chiapas in seguito a un processo geologico avvenuto decine di milioni di anni fa, è rimasta esposta all'erosione da parte del fiume che percorre il canyon per una lunghezza di circa 15 chilometri arrivando ad una larghezza compresa tra uno e due chilometri. Attorno ad esso si estende il Sumidero Canyon National Park, creato nel 1972 per preservare flora e fauna, oltre al grande patrimonio geologico della zona. La vegetazione è perlopiù costituita da foresta pluviale e là, dove le alte rocce a picco lasciano spazio a più modeste formazioni rocciose, alberi e piante mostrano prepotentemente il loro vivido verde. Per quanto riguarda la fauna, sono per lo più gli uccelli a popolare questo particolare ecosistema e sono presenti con un gran numero di specie. Personalmente ho avvistato aironi, cormorani, pellicani e avvoltoi (o comunque parenti stretti). Vi sono anche diverse specie di mammiferi: il puma e l'ocelot non ho avuto la fortuna di vederli ma ho visto le scimmie. Ma, l'animale che sicuramente lascia maggiormente incantati, è un rettile e non è certo l'iguana nera che ho pur visto abbarbicata sui rami degli alberi, bensì il coccodrillo. L'incontro con questa specie animale non lascia mai indifferenti se si ha la fortuna di vedere degli splendidi esemplari in natura e, anche in questo viaggio, ho avuto il privilegio di fare questo bell'incontro. Eccovi dunque qualche scatto, con una luce pessima e senza sole (che si è timidamente mostrato per, forse, cinque minuti) e, per lo più, realizzato con la barca in movimento e sfruttando al massimo il 18-200 che, devo dire, si è comportato molto bene tenuto anche conto che scattavo a mano libera. Spero di riuscire a trasmettervi almeno in parte l'emozione di questo mio incontro con la natura. Al rientro siamo stati omaggiati dal consueto acquazzone tropicale ma questa è un'altra storia.... ;)
