Questo bellissimo ragno viene chiamato comunemente ragno tigre, epeira fasciata, ragno zebra o argiope fasciata. Ha la caratteristica di lasciare una specie di "firma" sulla ragnatela (la cucitura a zig-zag che si vede scendere verso il basso). Il maschio è molto più piccolo e, se non riesce a fuggire, viene divorato dopo l'accoppiamento. Spesso una parte dell'organo riproduttivo del maschio (pedipalpo) si spezza formando una specie di tappo che impedisce ad altri maschi di fecondare la stessa femmina, assicurandosi così il successo riproduttivo. Pur essendo uno dei più grandi ragni nostrani, non è pericoloso per l'uomo ed è anzi molto utile nella lotta contro vari parassiti (ad esempio le farfalle dell'ifantria).
