Un tempo all'interno delle sue mura fortificate di mattoni era racchiusa tutta l'antica città, divenuta capitale dell'Impero nel XVI secolo. E' uno degli edifici più iconici e riconoscibili di Bukhara e anche uno dei più visitati e fotografati dai viaggiatori, anche se ormai circa l'80% dei suoi edifici sono in rovina. Gli archeologi ritengono che venne edificata nel V secolo o nel VI secolo, ma in realtà non ci sono testimonianze precise in merito; quello che si sa con certezza è che venne abitata fino al 1920, quando venne bombardata dalla Armata Rossa. Oggi una parte della cittadella è stata ristrutturata e si può visitare.
