La miniera metallifera di Monteponi ha rappresentato per lungo tempo uno dei più importanti impianti estrattivi d'Italia per il piombo, l'argento e lo zinco. Oggi Monteponi è considerato uno fra i più caratteristici insediamenti minerari della Sardegna di grande valore storico e culturale. L'aree estrattive dismessa rappresenta, tuttavia, un serio problema ambientale, sia per le importanti modifiche prodotte sul paesaggio, sia, soprattutto, per la presenza di materiali di scarto abbandonati in discariche che costituiscono pericolose fonti di inquinamento per i territori circostanti e in particolar modo per le acque.
