Male white-backed woodpecker sent on December 19, 2021 (9:26) by Marco Cirillo. 50 comments, 1404 views. [retina]

con Canon EF 1.4x III, 1/1000 f/9.0, ISO 800, tripod. Parco Nazionale Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, Italy. Specie: Dendrocopos medius

Crop 12% #Wild

Spectacular photography.
congratulations!
I think I agree with Picchio rosso mezzano.
The "whiteback" has white speckling on the back more extended towards the head (in some specimens it becomes a bar) and black stripe on the thinner neck.
Peccato do not see the belly ...
However, nice catch.

Guys you opened my eyes.... but I can not understand how I can have portrayed two peaks of different species that peep into the same hole after a few minutes, the mezzano brings the imbeccata at 10.52 on May 10, 2019 and on the same day but at 11.26 the whiteback faces the same nest!!!! Look at the other photo I put and unequivocally it is a white back that beaks to the same nest!!! I can't quite understand why....

in fact they are the two species in the same nest, but have you seen the young? if there are the only pausible explanation at that point it could be a hybridization, but I have never heard such a thing between the peaks, but we should never be surprised

Sigismondi, first of all thank you for your courteous passage and I answer that in that morning we arrived at 10.30 and left for lunch and no young people appeared from the nest, probably the nesting was still in its infancy. Who knows why the mezzano has appeared at the nest, however now I went to see the other 19 shots that I have of the mezzano at the nest and I noticed that it arrived with the imbeccata and I think it went away even with the imbeccata, because in the last shot of the series the beak was still full .. greetings

Hello Marco
A situation as tangled and strange.

yes very strange, but the female of the whiteback that has a very evident dimorphism have you seen it?

Beautiful

No, Sigismondi, I have not seen, what dimorphism are you referring to, in which part of the body? Sorry but the two photos of dorsobianco that I put are of the same male ... red vertex and not black as in the female!!! I also have some shots of the female and the vertex is completely black...
