Come tutti gli anni, con l'arrivo di ottobre, mi ritrovo ostinatamente a percorrere i sentieri che portano in alto e, anche se il peso dello zaino schiaccia sempre più sulle spalle e gli scarponi sembrano diventati di piombo, il cuore, che sempre cela l'indomita volontà di osservare ancora la muta della lepre o magari dell'ermellino, mi fa avanzare. A 2300 metri, mi accorgo che sulla neve caduta con le ultime perturbazioni, a fianco di una pesta di lepre, si palesano alcune tracce lasciate dalle pernici. La zona non è particolarmente nota per le bianche, ma avverto chiaramente la necessità di rallentare. Porto i binocoli agli occhi, sotto alla pelle un presentimento tende i nervi e gli occhi si stringono. Ai piedi di un cespuglio di rododendro una sagoma affusolata, innocente dall'occhio lucido, mi indica la direzione da seguire. I binocoli lasciano il posto alla reflex proprio mentre, dopo pochi passi, questo esemplare non visto fa scattare, come in un'imboscata, l'involo della brigata. Più che uno scatto, una stoccata…
