Sulla riva del canale Griboyedova sorge questo meraviglioso edificio di culto, uno dei più importanti della città: parliamo della Chiesa del Salvatore sul Sangue Versato, situata a pochi passi dalla Prospettiva Nevsky, e venne eretta nell'esatto luogo dove venne assassinato lo zar Alessandro II di Russia.La costruzione della Chiesa del Salvatore sul Sangue Versato (il cui nome ufficiale, tradotto dal russo, è quello di Cattedrale della Resurrezione di Cristo) ebbe inizio nel 1883, durante l'Impero di Alessandro III, che volle così commemorare il padre, ucciso in quello stesso luogo. I lavori furono completati soltanto 24 anni dopo, nel 1907, quando lo zar era Nicola II.Dopo la Rivoluzione d'Ottobre, la chiesa venne saccheggiata e gravemente danneggiata; i beni rimasti vennero trasferiti alla Cattedrale di Sant'Isacco; a più riprese vennero approvati progetti di smantellamento dell'edificio, tutti fortunatamente andati male. Di fatto, l'edificio smise di svolgere le sue funzioni di edificio di culto già a partire dal 1930, e dovette subire l'umiliazione di fungere da granaio e addirittura da obitorio, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. E in effetti, fino al 1968 la Chiesa del Salvatore sul Sangue Versato è sempre stata in bilico tra demolizione e rivalorizzazione artistica; in quest'anno, infatti, il Ministero delle Belle Arti e dell'Architettura decise di porlo sotto la propria egida. Due anni dopo, la direzione della chiesa passò alla Cattedrale di Sant'Isacco, coi fondi della quale vennero finanziati i lavori di restauro, riconoscendo finalmente l'immenso valore artistico dell'edificio; in effetti, non si tratterebbe nemmeno di un edificio di culto, non essendo mai stato consacrato, ma piuttosto un gesto di commemorazione del figlio nei confronti del padre. A differenza degli altri edifici di culto russi, prevalentemente in stile barocco o neoclassico, la Chiesa del Salvatore sul Sangue Versato è un magnifico esempio di architettura russa medievale, sulla base della famosa Cattedrale di San Basilio a Mosca. La chiesa è famosa soprattutto per i suoi meravigliosi mosaici, che ricoprono una superficie di oltre 7.000 metri quadri: con la Basilica di San Marco, probabilmente è il più grande mosaico del mondo. Peccato che il giorno in cui ero lì la chiesa fosse chiusa per riposo settimanale.
