La storia di Castel Sant'angelo coincide sostanzialmente con quella di Roma ed è impossibile scindere queste due entità così profondamente compenetrate: i mutamenti, i rivolgimenti, le miserie e le glorie dell'antica Urbe sembrano riflettersi puntualmente nella massiccia mole che da quasi duemila anni si specchia nelle pigre acque del Tevere. Nasce come sepolcro voluto dall'imperatore Adriano in un'area periferica dell'antica Roma ed assolve questa sua funzione originaria fino al 403 d.C. circa, quando viene incluso nelle mura aureliane per volere dell'imperatore occidentale Onorio. Da questo momento inizia una 'seconda vita' nelle vesti di castellum, baluardo avanzato oltre il Tevere a protezione della città. Numerose famiglie romane se ne contendono il possesso, che sembra garantire una posizione di preminenza nell'ambito del confuso ordinamento dell'Urbe: sarà roccaforte del senatore Teofilatto, dei Crescenzi, dei Pierleoni e degli Orsini. E' proprio un papa Orsini - Niccolò III - a far realizzare il Passetto di Borgo, che collega il Vaticano al Castello, in una continuità fisica ed ideale. Nel 1367 le chiavi dell'edificio vengono consegnate a papa Urbano V, per sollecitare il rientro della Curia a Roma dall'esilio avignonese. Da questo momento in poi Castel Sant'Angelo lega inscindibilmente le sue sorti a quelle dei pontefici, che lo adattano a residenza in cui rifugiarsi nei momenti di pericolo. Grazie alla sua struttura solida e fortificata ed alla sua fama di imprendibilità il Castello ospita l'Archivio ed il Tesoro Vaticani, ma viene adattato anche a tribunale e prigione. Con il cambiamento di funzione, l'aspetto e l'impianto del Castello vengono rimodellati attraverso una lunghissima serie di interventi che si snodano nel corso di quattro secoli. Nuove strutture si assommano a quelle preesistenti, alterandole, modificandone la funzione, talvolta cancellandole, in un processo di trasformazioni ininterrotte che sembrano scivolare l'una nell'altra senza soluzione di continuità. La storia lunghissima e variegata dell'edificio, con le sue mille metamorfosi sembra essersi sedimentata nel complicato intrico di sotterranei, ambienti, logge, scale e cortili che costituiscono l'attuale assetto del Castello.
