Thanks very much, Tim! I hesitated to post this, so appreciate your encouragement. I'm enjoying the lens but haven't taken it out many times yet. Although I realise that it is 'light' for a lens of this type, I still find it quite heavy, so wouldn't slip it into my camera case 'just in case'.

I would like the bird a bit more distinct, admittedly.

This lens is much lighter than mine - 40% lighter - but its only downside is lack of tripod collar, not just for tripod use but use on a monopod, which can really take the weight off when in use (as I found out in Cowes with the mega 150-500mm). Using any of these beasts using the camera's trpod socket will never work. And as I know you prefer to travel light, then it still is a fairly weighty lump of glass to drag around.

Me, too, Tim! The image stabilisation seems to be performing well handheld - I've yet to mount it on a tripod but I think it will be fine there too for images with a fairly fast shutter speed. Long exposures would probably be a different matter but of course that's not what I bought this lens for!
