Entrando nell'Acropoli dell'antica Ferentino lungo una strada che si snoda in diversi tornanti, le mura dell'avancorpo appaiono come divise in due parti: quella inferiore è costruita in opera poligonale, quella superiore in opera quadrata, blocchi parallelepipedi in travertino ferentinate. L'avancorpo venne infatti costruito quando Ferentino era già divenuta una città romana, sotto i consoli Aulo Irzio e Marco Lollio, come recita l'iscrizione sulla parete. Sotto il passaggio coperto si apre un criptoportico che corre all'interno delle mura e che secondo la leggenda avrebbe ospitato le prigioni cittadine nelle quali fu rinchiuso Ambrogio, martire patrono della città. L'avancorpo introduce all'acropoli, sulla quale ora sorgono il palazzo episcopale e il duomo.
