Il personaggio della "mammy" nasce fra gli schiavi alla vigilia della Rivoluzione Americana (1763-1783). La classica mammy, è una sorta di matrona di colore che adora i suoi padroni, si prende cura della sua casa e dei suoi figli e col passare degli anni, assume un ruolo primario fra il personale di servizio, perché è quella più a stretto contatto con i membri della famiglia. La mammy diventa personaggio letterario in molti romanzi dell'epoca e nel 1939, per la prima volta, nel film Via col Vento, conquista il grande schermo. Il ruolo viene affidato per le sue caratteristiche fisiche, all'attrice di colore Hattie McDaniel, nata in una famiglia di ex schiavi, ultimogenita di 13 figli che, vincerà il premio Oscar come miglior attrice non protagonista, consacrandola: “Mammy per eccellenza”. Chi non la ricorda la famosa bambinaia di Rossella ?. Definita come una donna molto grassa e severa, vuole molto bene a Rossella, che considera la sua piccina, ma che castiga in continuazione per il suo comportamento scorretto. Ho sempre considerato la mammy un personaggio quasi carismatico, e vedendola, in quel vicolo romano, non ho potuto fare a meno di farci uno scatto.
